Party Pinwheels recipe (Makes 12 to 18) To make the pastry, you will need: 4oz (100g) of plain flour a mixing bowl a butter knife or table knife 2oz (50g) of margarine a teaspoon cold water a wooden spoon You will also need: a baking tray greaseproof paper or baking parchment 1oz (25g) of plain flour a rolling-pin 2 teaspoons of apple chutney 2 teaspoons of Marmite (Vegex, Vegemite) 4oz (100g) of grated Red Leicester cheese or a similar hard cheese a serrated knife* Put the 4oz (100g) of flour into the mixing bowl. Use the butter knife or table knife to cut the margarine into small pieces, and put the margarine into the bowl with the flour. Keep on cutting the margarine into smaller and smaller pieces, then use your fingers to rub the flour and margarine together until the mixture looks like small crumbs. Add 2 teaspoons of cold water, and use the wooden spoon to mix it in. Keep adding water (only a teaspoon or two at a time!) and mixing it in until the mixture feels like Plasticine or Play-Doh. Use your hands to make sure there are no crumbly bits left in the pastry, then roll it into two equal-sized balls and put it into the refrigerator for at least 20 minutes. Line the baking tray with greaseproof paper, and turn your oven on to 200°C. Dust a work surface with the 1oz (25g) of flour. Roll out the pastry on the floured work surface, making each piece of pastry into a rough rectangle about 1/4-inch (5mm) thick and twice as long as it is wide. Use the back of a teaspoon to spread one piece of pastry with the chutney, and spread the other piece in the same way with the Marmite. Sprinkle half of the grated cheese over each piece of pastry, then carefully roll up each piece of pastry, starting from the longer edge, into a log shape. Use the serrated knife to saw each log into slices about 1/2-inch (1cm) thick. (Try not to press on too hard, or the slices will squash out of shape!) Arrange the slices on the baking tray, and bake them in the pre-heated oven for 15 to 20 minutes until they are golden brown. Take the baking tray out of the oven and let your Party Pinwheels cool. They are now ready to serve. (You can eat them either warm or completely cold.) *Note: Cutting the pastry rolls into pinwheels needs care and a sharp knife, and therefore adult assistance for younger children.
